Thailand has become one of the bright spots in Southeast Asia’s video and Pay TV landscape in 2023. The country was one of a few in the region to add new SVOD subscribers in the first half of the year during a period marked by a dramatic slowdown in growth according to Media Partners Asia (MPA) and was voted the country most likely to lead the next Asian content wave at the Asia Video Summit 2023.
With a population of over 66M and 20M TV households, it is home to a robust TV and video ecosystem. With an entertainment and creative industry that has long been held in high regard across the region, Thai shows and talent have been gaining recognition beyond its domestic shores. What are the latest developments in this rapidly evolving market, what are the new growth opportunities and what more does Thailand need to do to ensure that its undoubted potential is fulfilled?
Thailand in View 2023 explored the challenges being faced by local, regional and global streaming services, and what their priorities are around content, growth and ultimately, business models, for the coming year. Will the growing consumption of streaming services undermine the pay TV business? Or will both services be able to grow alongside and not at the expense of each other?
